What happens if I get Chlamydia when I'm pregnant?

As we've mentioned before you may not be aware that you have Chlamydia as some people have no symptoms at all.

In pregnancy this infection can be passed onto your baby during the actual birth and (less commonly) before the baby is born. This can cause inflammation and discharge from the baby's eye (conjunctivitis) and pneumonia. It may also be linked to early miscarriage or premature birth.

Chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics when you are pregnant and when you are breastfeeding - the antibiotics won't harm the baby - but do tell the doctor or nurse that you are pregnant to make sure the correct type of antibiotic is prescribed.

You will need to return for a repeat test once you've finished your treatment and most importantly your partner will also need to be tested and treated with antibiotics to avoid re-infection.

Please see our 'Partner/contact' pages for more information or if you would like to talk to someone please feel free to contact us in confidence on 0845 050 9530 or email us at ruthe1@iow.nhs.uk.

Remember if you have symptoms or are under 16 or over 25 please contact the Island's Integrated Sexual Health Service for more advice and a test. Visit our other pages for more information and contact details.
