Frequently Asked Questions

Will I know how long I have had the infection?

A positive test result does not give any indication of the length of time someone has been infected for. You might not know whether you have caught it from your current or a previous sexual partner. These doubts can be hard to handle. Some people feel upset or angry and find it difficult to talk to their partner or friends. Don't be afraid to talk about how you feel with us at the Chlamydia Screening Office or with the staff at the Islands Integrated Sexual Health Clinic.

What if I don't want to take the test?

This is not a problem. This is a screening programme not a mandatory test. It is absolutely your choice whether or not to get tested. You have every right to refuse to take part in the programme. It will not affect the way you are looked after in the future. If you change your mind, you are welcome to come for a test at any other time.

Will the antibiotics clear the infection completely?

Yes, providing you follow the instructions you are given, your partner is also treated and that you do not have sex for the stated time after your treatment with antibiotics.

Will I ever need to have another test?

You should have another test if or whenever you or your partner have penetrative sex with someone else. We don't mind how often you have a test! It is a sensible and proactive way to keep yourself and your partner safe from all sexually transmitted infections.

How will I know if Chlamydia has affected my fertility?

Chlamydia is just one of many factors that can affect your fertility. However, the more episodes of infection a person has, the more likely it is to cause complications which can affect fertility. If you have had chlamydia you will not normally be offered any routine tests to see if you are fertile unless you and your partner find that you have difficulty getting pregnant. If you are concerned, talk to your GP or practice nurse.

How do I let my partner(s) know?

The nurse advisor will discuss how to inform your partner (partner notification) when you attend the clinic for your own treatment. You can inform your partner(s) yourself and we can give you a contact card for you to give to them. Or if you feel unable to inform your partner(s), the nurse advisor can confidentially write, text or phone them with your permission. The decision is entirely yours.

Who can I talk to if I'm worried?

The Chlamydia Screening Office on 0845 050 9530 or via email at ruthe1@iow.nhs.uk. Or for more information about STI's and details of your local sexual health services, call 01983 534202.
